What exactly does the term ‘fire-resistant’ door mean? Is it the same as being fire-proof?
A fire-resistant door is one that has been tested according to the code of practice for fire precaution on buildings. A fire-resistant door is used to reduce the spread of fire and smoke between separate compartments in a building.

Being fire-resistant isn’t the same as being fire-proof, which means unburnable or indestructible by fire.

Fire-resistant doors have fire ratings of 30 minutes, 60 minutes or 90 minutes. These ratings indicate the door’s ability to resist the passage of flames so that people have enough time to evacuate safely.
Manufacturers of fire-resistant doors would have sent their doors for the relevant full scale fire tests at accredited testing and certification organisations and have certificates that prove their doors’ fire resistance. Makers of fire-resistant doors would have displayed their certificates prominently in their offices as a mark of product quality to instill confidence in their customers.

One important certificate to look out for fire-resistant doors is the Certificate of Conformity (COC). This certificate is proof that the door maker complies to the Singapore SS332:2007 Clause 4 Specification for Fire Doors. You may request for a photocopy of the COC.

Upon purchase of the fire-resistant doors, the door maker will give you the following: Record of issue of fire door labels issued by the licensee and STS listed labels.
Our fire-resistant doors are tested and certified fire-resistant by TÜV SÜD PSB Singapore, a provider of a comprehensive and integrated suite of product testing, inspection and certification services. They have also been tested at BRANZ, the Resource Centre For Building Excellence at Wellington, New Zealand.

In the recent years, our products are certified by Singapore Test Services Pte Ltd (STS), a leading provider of one-stop accredited test, inspection, certification, calibration and training services.

How a school dropout established an enterprise specialising in
fire-resistant timber doors

Founder and sales manager of Shing Avenue Doors, Philip Tiew became an apprentice with a door maker back in the 1970s. That sparked his passion for the craft. Through sheer grit and a relentless learning attitude, he established Shing Avenue Doors in 2006.

Philip is sort of a ‘paper chaser’ in the corporate sense. He wasn’t satisfied with
Shing Avenue Doors as only being a specialist in the manufacture, design and installation of fire-resistant timber doors . He made the company into the first, and only door manufacturer in Singapore and Malaysia with a technical know-how patent. Over the years, the company went on to garner many certifications for its fire-resistant doors.
